SK Hynix is ​​in talks with Intel about manufacturing memory chips in the United States for the first time, according to a new Reuters report, a move that could expand the South Korean company's presence in the American market.

The two companies are currently exploring several potential options, including SK Hynix leasing part of Intel's chip manufacturing plant in Ohio, or establishing a joint venture that would include both companies along with several major cloud computing firms interested in securing a stable supply of memory chips.

Talks are still in their exploratory stages, and no formal agreement has yet been reached. Reuters reported the information, citing sources familiar with the matter, while shares of SK Hynix and Intel rose following the report.

Intel could benefit from any potential deal, especially since its Ohio factory project has faced significant delays. The company announced plans in 2022 to invest up to $100 billion in the site, targeting a 2025 start date, before pushing it back to at least 2030.

However, the deal could face an obstacle related to the South Korean government, as it remains unclear what type of memory chips SK Hynix plans to manufacture in the United States. If the plan includes advanced technologies such as HBM or DRAM, the deal could be subject to government review, given the sensitive nature of these technologies.
