One person was killed during labor and student protests that erupted in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, after being run over by a police tactical vehicle. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto condemned the police's excessive measures.
In a video address on Friday, President Subianto expressed his sorrow over the death of the 21-year-old man, condemning the "excessive measures" employed by the police.
For his part, Jakarta Police Chief Asip Edi Suhiri apologized for the incident in a press statement, pledging a full investigation and legal action against those involved.
Similarly, the Professional and Security Division of the National Police announced the detention of seven officers from the capital's mobile brigade unit who were linked to the incident. They noted that the officers are under investigation with the participation of external oversight bodies to ensure transparency.
The incident occurred in central Jakarta on Thursday evening. The capital has witnessed a series of protests near the parliamentary building this week. Video clips showed a tactical vehicle belonging to the mobile police brigade unit driving into the crowds, knocking down the victim and running him over without stopping.
The incident sparked widespread public anger. The Indonesian Student Union announced its intention to organize a protest in front of the National Police headquarters to reject police violence.
It is worth noting that through these protests, workers and students are calling for wage increases, the abolition of the outsourcing system, amendments to the 2020 Job Creation Law, and tax reductions. This comes amid growing anger over deteriorating economic conditions, allegations of corruption, and the increasing role of the military institution in governance.
