EU Reaffirms Commitment to Talks with Washington to Avert New Tariffs..

European Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič on Monday pledged renewed negotiations with U.S. counterparts to secure a deal before new 30% tariffs take effect August 1.

Urgent Diplomatic Push
Speaking ahead of an EU trade ministers' meeting in Brussels, Šefčovič stated: "I intend to speak again with my American counterparts later today. I cannot imagine leaving the negotiating table without making a genuine effort," noting Washington "remains open to continued talks."

Warning Against Prolonged Uncertainty
The Commissioner condemned what he called "unjustified tariffs" creating market instability, stressing "this situation cannot continue indefinitely." He confirmed reaching agreement remains the EU's top priority but warned the bloc is "considering all scenarios, including measured and proportionate countermeasures."

United Front Among Member States
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, emphasized: "We must demonstrate strength to achieve a fair deal. We don't want a trade war with the U.S. or escalation... But as the saying goes, 'If you want peace, prepare for war.'"

French Trade Minister Laurent Saint-Martin took a harder line: "Our European response must be prepared without taboos. Holding back weakens our negotiating position."
