Algeria called on Thursday for strengthening preventive diplomacy to ease tensions and prevent conflicts before they erupt, while reaffirming its support for the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people.
The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a press release that this came during a speech by Toufik Koudri, Algeria's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, during a UN Security Council briefing on cooperation between the UN and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Koudri emphasized the importance of deepening cooperation to address security challenges.
Koudri stated that Palestinians continue to face hatred, discrimination, and systematic deprivation of their fundamental rights, reiterating the call for respecting their inalienable rights, including their right to an independent state and to live in dignity and security.
He added that "the OIC's capabilities in the field of regional mediation represent a valuable asset that should be fully utilized," calling for "stronger cooperation in combating terrorism, peacekeeping, and post-conflict peacebuilding."
Koudri noted that the relationship between the UN and OIC provides a natural framework for enhancing intercultural and interreligious dialogue, recalling the OIC's initiatives in this field, including the declaration of March 15 as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia and the establishment of a UN Special Envoy position for this issue.
Koudri pointed out that Algeria believes the time has come to inject more dynamism and ambition into the UN-OIC partnership to contribute to achieving peace, security, and sustainable development goals.
