China and Azerbaijan signed 20 cooperation documents on Wednesday to strengthen bilateral relations and establish a comprehensive strategic partnership in the areas of implementing the Belt and Road Initiative, the judiciary, green development, the digital economy, intellectual property rights, and space.China's Xinhua News Agency reported that this came after talks held by Chinese President Xi Jinping with his Azerbaijani counterpart, Ilham Aliyev, who arrived in Beijing on Tuesday for a three-day state visit. The agency quoted the Chinese president as stressing during the talks the need to increase political trust, deepen practical cooperation, and enhance international coordination between China and Azerbaijan to open a new chapter in relations between the two countries, which will bring greater benefits to both peoples. Jinping said that the two countries "are committed to mutual respect, justice and fairness, mutually beneficial cooperation, and support on issues concerning each other's core interests."He noted that the "fraternal" Sino-Azerbaijani relations have grown stronger despite the distance and changes in the international situation. Regarding global trade, he stated that "the customs and trade war harms the rights and legitimate interests of various countries and undermines the multilateral trading system, with serious repercussions for the global economic system."The Chinese president expressed Beijing's willingness to work with Baku to preserve the UN-centered international system and the international order based on international law. For his part, the agency quoted Aliyev as expressing his country's desire to deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership with China, expand cooperation in green energy, technology, cultural and party exchanges, and enhance coordination on regional and international issues. He affirmed Azerbaijan's adherence to the "One China" principle and its recognition that Taiwan is "an inseparable part of Chinese territory," in addition to its support for the Chinese government's efforts to achieve national reunification.
