UN Security Council Condemns Attack on Displacement Camps in Sudan's El Fasher..

The UN Security Council has issued a forceful condemnation of the Rapid Support Forces' (RSF) repeated attacks on Zamzam and Abu Shouk displacement camps in El Fasher, Darfur, which have resulted in significant civilian casualties.

In a press statement Thursday evening, the Council expressed grave concern over reports indicating these attacks have killed at least 400 people, including children and no fewer than 11 aid workers. The 15-member body:

  1. Demanded Accountability:

    • Called for RSF to be held responsible for the attacks

    • Reiterated demands to lift El Fasher siege and implement immediate ceasefire

  2. Humanitarian Protections:

    • Urged conflict parties to protect civilians and comply with international law

    • Emphasized compliance with Resolution 2736 and Jeddah Declaration commitments

    • Demanded protection for humanitarian personnel and facilities

  3. Conflict Resolution:

    • Expressed deep concern over two years of conflict's impact

    • Encouraged parties to engage in UN-mediated indirect talks

    • Called for permanent ceasefire and comprehensive political process

  4. Regional Stability:

    • Warned member states against external interference

    • Reaffirmed commitment to Sudan's sovereignty and territorial integrity

    • Urged compliance with arms embargo (Resolutions 1556/2004 & 2750)

Context:
Zamzam and Abu Shouk camps - Darfur's largest IDP settlements housing over 700,000 people displaced since 2003 - now face catastrophic conditions with:

  • Continued violent attacks

  • Severe food shortages

  • Destroyed water sources

  • Near-total aid blockade
