A US court has brought to a close one of the most prominent disputes in the artificial intelligence sector, after a jury dismissed Elon Musk's lawsuit against the founders of OpenAI. The ruling provides the company with significant legal support as it transitions to a profit-driven model backed by substantial investment from Microsoft.
This represents a legal victory for the company's founders, Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, following weeks of intense court proceedings. The jury concluded that the statute of limitations had already expired when Musk filed the lawsuit in 2024, accusing Altman and Brockman of misappropriating a charitable foundation after he left the company in 2018.
Although the jury's decision was advisory, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers upheld the verdict, dismissing the claims of breach of charitable trust and unjust enrichment due to the statute of limitations. She also warned Musk's lawyers that any potential appeal could be dismissed immediately.
