Algeria Summons French Chargé d'Affaires..

The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Thursday that it had summoned the Chargé d'Affaires of the French Embassy in Algiers to the ministry headquarters, where two verbal notes were delivered:

First Note: Formal notification of Algeria's decision to abrogate the 2013 Franco-Algerian agreement on mutual visa exemptions for holders of diplomatic and service passports.

The ministry stated this "goes beyond France's temporary suspension [of the agreement], as abrogation permanently terminates the agreement itself."

Effective immediately, French citizens holding diplomatic/service passports will require visas.

Algeria reserves the right to "apply mirror requirements based on conditions France imposes on Algerian nationals," calling this "a strict application of reciprocity" that reflects Algeria's "rejection of all provocation, pressure, and blackmail attempts."

Second Note: Notification of Algeria's decision to:

Terminate France's free use of state-owned properties allocated to its embassy

Review all preferential lease contracts between the French Embassy and Algerian property management agencies

Request France send a delegation to Algeria to begin negotiations on this matter

Background:

The move follows Algeria's earlier announcement canceling visa exemptions for French diplomatic/service passport holders, explicitly tying the decision to France's treatment of Algerian nationals. The ministry emphasized this establishes full visa reciprocity.
