A UN official stated that there is "no safe place in Ukraine" as Russian airstrikes intensify across the country, resulting in more civilian casualties and widespread infrastructure destruction.
The remarks were made during a briefing by Miroslav Jenča, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Europe in the Department of Political Affairs, who addressed the UN Security Council via video conference on Friday evening. The session focused on maintaining international peace and security.
Jenča highlighted that civilian casualties in June reached their highest level in three years, with approximately 6,754 killed or injured in the first half of this year alone, according to the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
He also warned of growing humanitarian needs amid declining donor support.
In his closing statement, Jenča stressed that the staggering and escalating human toll of the nearly three-and-a-half-year war underscores the urgent need for a complete, immediate, and unconditional ceasefire as a first step toward a just and lasting peace.
