The United Nations has expressed profound alarm over reports of brutal attacks on villages in Sudan's Kordofan region that killed at least 300 people, including women and children, with many more injured.
In its latest update on Tuesday evening, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that the attacks occurred in the Bara area of North Kordofan State between 10-13 July.
OCHA noted that verifying the exact civilian death toll remains difficult due to ongoing hostilities and communication blackouts in the area, adding that the attacks also resulted in burned homes and mass displacement.
The UN office described these incidents as yet another "tragic reminder" of the devastating toll the conflict is taking on civilians across Sudan.
OCHA reiterated its condemnation of all civilian killings and targeting of civilian infrastructure - including schools, homes, shelters and humanitarian assets - urging all warring parties to "fully comply" with their obligations under international humanitarian law.
