The media office of the Iraqi Prime Minister's office stated in a release that Al-Sudani held a phone call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, during which he congratulated him on the "peace agreement between the Turkish government and the PKK." He emphasized that the agreement would positively reflect on the region, promote stability, and accelerate development for the benefit of its peoples.
The statement added that the Iraqi Prime Minister discussed several bilateral issues with the Turkish President, including the disarmament of the PKK and the Israeli aggression on Gaza.
It further clarified that both sides stressed the importance of ending the ongoing Israeli occupation's aggression against Gaza and Lebanon, the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians, and the need to prevent further escalation by resolving issues through dialogue, international laws, and treaties.
PKK Disarms as a Goodwill Gesture
The PKK announced yesterday that several of its fighters, including leaders, had surrendered and burned their weapons in Sulaymaniyah province in northern Iraq as a goodwill gesture, heeding the call of its founder, Abdullah Öcalan, in preparation for the peace process in Turkey.
Additionally, the "Peace and Democratic Society Group," the first PKK faction to lay down arms, declared that it had destroyed its weapons of its "own free will."
The disarmament process will be carried out in phases, with a group of PKK members initially surrendering their weapons "symbolically." The full disarmament process is expected to be completed within a few months, with projections indicating it will conclude by next September.
