UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged the international community on Friday evening to invest in policies that ensure young people have access to education, healthcare, decent work, full protection of their reproductive rights, and a fair, inclusive, and sustainable future.
This came in Guterres’ message on the occasion of World Population Day, observed this year under the theme "Empowering young people to build the families they aspire to in a world of justice and hope." The event was held at the United Nations headquarters.
Guterres stated, "This year, we celebrate the vast potential of today’s youth—the largest generation of young people in history—and the promise they hold for a brighter future."
He emphasized that this year’s theme reaffirms the pledge made at the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development, which recognized every person’s right to make informed choices about their lives and futures.
Guterres warned that many young people today face economic uncertainty, inequality, health challenges, and the consequences of the climate crisis and conflicts. Yet, he added, "they are stepping up as leaders, armed with courage, a strong conscience, and a clear vision."
The UN Secretary-General concluded his message by saying, "Let us stand with young people and build a future where everyone can shape their own destiny in a just and peaceful world filled with hope."
