U.S. President Announces 35% Tariffs on Canada Starting Next August..

In a message sent to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and posted on his Truth Social platform Thursday evening, President Trump stated: "If Canada chooses, for any reason, to raise its tariffs on Washington, any additional amount will be added to the 35% we will impose."

He attributed these tariffs to the fentanyl crisis in the United States, which he claimed is "partly due to Canada’s failure to stop the flow of drugs into our country." The U.S. President argued that "Canada has not done enough" to curb the influx of this narcotic, adding that the tariff rates could be adjusted—"increased or decreased"—based on Canada’s cooperation in stopping fentanyl trafficking.

Trump further clarified that the tariffs would be revoked if Canada or its companies agreed to "build or manufacture their products within the United States," emphasizing that his administration is ready to facilitate all necessary procedures and secure approvals "swiftly and professionally."

Previously, Trump had imposed 25% tariffs on Canadian goods but later exempted products covered under the 2020 U.S.-Canada-Mexico Trade Agreement. However, it remains unclear whether these exemptions will remain in effect after the new tariffs take force on August 1.
