Egypt stresses the importance of cooperation with the European Union to address the root causes of illegal migration..

Egypt's Foreign Minister and Minister of Emigration, Dr. Badr Abdel Aty, stressed on Sunday the importance of enhancing cooperation with the European Union to address the root causes of irregular migration through a comprehensive approach linking migration and development.

The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigration stated in a release that this came during a phone call Abdel Aty received from EU Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner. The two officials discussed ways to strengthen Egypt-EU cooperation on migration issues.

Abdel Aty described migration as a shared challenge for both sides, necessitating enhanced coordination based on mutual interests to support stability and development efforts in the region. He emphasized the importance of continuing to implement bilateral cooperation projects, whether within the framework of the comprehensive strategic partnership or existing cooperation programs.

The minister also affirmed the importance of strengthening partnerships in legal migration through launching joint vocational training and technical education programs. These would help qualify Egyptian labor and facilitate its integration into the European job market in line with labor market needs and requirements.

On another note, Abdel Aty reviewed the burdens Egypt shoulders as it hosts approximately 10 million foreigners, including refugees, migrants, and asylum seekers. These individuals receive basic services on par with Egyptian citizens, in addition to the resulting economic pressures.
