Poll: Record Confidence in the European Union, Growing Support for the Euro and Common Defense Policy..

The latest Eurobarometer survey, released today (Wednesday), reveals the highest level of trust in the European Union in 18 years, alongside unprecedented support for the euro and the EU’s common security and defense policy (CSDP).

Key Findings:

  1. Public Trust in EU Institutions at 18-Year High

    • 52% of Europeans express trust in the EU—the highest since 2007.

    • Trust is strongest among youth (15-24 years) at 59%.

    • 52% trust the European Commission, while confidence in national governments (36%) and local parliaments (37%) remains lower.

  2. Strong European Identity & Optimism

    • 75% feel they are EU citizens—the highest in over two decades.

    • 62% are optimistic about the EU’s future.

  3. Record Support for the Euro

    • 74% back the euro (highest since its launch).

    • Support rises to 83% in eurozone countries.

    • 44% view the EU economy as "good" vs. 48% "bad", while 43% expect stability in the next year.

  4. EU Seen as a "Stabilizing Force" in a Turbulent World

    • 69% see the EU as a "haven of stability."

    • 88% support rules-based international cooperation, while 86% reject protectionist tariffs (e.g., U.S. trade policies).

    • 80% back EU retaliatory tariffs if other nations impose duties on EU imports.

  5. Overwhelming Backing for Common Defense Policy

    • 81% support CSDP—the highest since 2004.

    • 78% are concerned about Europe’s future security.

    • Top EU budget priorities: Defense & security (43%), jobs & healthcare (42%), and education/culture (34%).

    • 40% demand increased defense funding, followed by energy transition (32%).

  6. Peace & Stability Top EU’s Perceived Benefits

    • 44% believe peace/stability will most positively impact their lives.

    • Followed by secure supply chains (27%) and job creation (26%).

    • 41% associate the EU most with peace, ahead of democracy (33%) and rule of law (28%).

  7. Strong Backing for Ukraine Amid Russian War

    • 80% support hosting Ukrainian refugees.

    • 76% favor humanitarian/financial aid to Ukraine72% back sanctions on Russia, and 60% support Ukraine’s EU candidacy.

    • 59% approve EU-funded military aid to Kyiv.

    • 77% view Russia’s war as a direct threat to EU security.

    • Top EU citizen concerns: Ukraine (27%), global issues (24%), and defense (20%).

Survey Methodology:

  • Conducted March 26–April 22, 2024, covering 26,000+ citizens from all 27 EU member states.

  • Included EU candidate countries (excluding Ukraine) and the UK.
