U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he has agreed to extend the deadline for imposing 50% tariffs on goods imported from the European Union until July 9.
In a post on the social media platform Truth Social on Sunday evening, Trump said he received a phone call from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who requested an extension of the deadline—originally set for June 1—for implementing the tariffs.
He noted that he agreed to postpone the tariff enforcement to July 9, adding that the Commission President stated that "discussions will begin quickly."
For her part, von der Leyen said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that she had a "good call" with the U.S. President, affirming that "Europe is ready to push trade talks with the United States swiftly and decisively to reach a good agreement."
