United States Announces Sanctions on Sudan Over Use of Chemical Weapons..

The United States announced today that it will impose sanctions on Sudan in two weeks, citing Khartoum's alleged non-compliance with the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).

Key Sanctions Measures:

  • Export Restrictions: Ban on certain U.S. exports to Sudan

  • Financial Restrictions: Denial of access to U.S. government credit lines

  • Effective Date: Sanctions will take effect immediately upon publication in the Federal Register, expected around June 6

Official Statement:

State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce stated:
"The United States will impose sanctions on Sudan, including restrictions on U.S. exports and access to U.S. government credit lines. These measures will take effect upon Federal Register publication, anticipated around June 6."

She emphasized that the U.S. "urges Sudan’s government to cease all chemical weapons use and fully comply with its CWC obligations."

Legal Basis:

  • The U.S. determined on April 24, 2024, under the Chemical and Biological Weapons Control and Warfare Elimination Act of 1991, that Sudan used chemical weapons in 2024.

  • The State Department submitted a report to Congress today confirming Sudan’s non-compliance with the CWC.

  • 15-day congressional notification period is required before sanctions take effect.

U.S. Commitment:

Bruce reiterated that Washington remains "fully committed to holding accountable those responsible for contributing to chemical weapons proliferation."

Next Steps:

  • Sanctions will be enforced unless Sudan demonstrates compliance before the deadline.

  • The U.S. continues to monitor Sudan’s adherence to international disarmament agreements.
